Below are photos of a new calliope built by fellow Son, Gary Russeth,  Berth Marks Tent,  Harlem, Georgia.  What a great job he did.  He has named it The Dancing Masters Calliope.  It took him about five weeks of work for him to complete this.  It is a functioning calliope which plays a number of Gay '90's-type music, such as Home on the Range, 12th Street Rag, The Man on the Flying Machine, Let Me Call You Sweetheart, Beer Barrel Polka, and many more.  Gary built the frame (1/3rd scale) for it and also the L&H dolls (about 18 inches high); the left and right sides of the calliope are identical.  The frame is about 60" long by 54" high by 32" wide (wheel to wheel).  He plans on pulling it in local parades using his 1/2-scale Tin Lizzy, including being in this year's Oliver Hardy Festival parade in Harlem on October 4th.  I can't wait to see and hear it in person.

We thank Gary for sharing his wonderful work with all Sons.

Subject: [Sons of the Desert] 1942 L&H newsreel footage --- new on DVD

Warner Home Video released the DVD boxset "Bette Davis Collection Vol.
3" on April 1. One of the films is IN THIS OUR LIFE (1942).

A bonus feature on that film's disc is raw, unedited newsreel footage
of a 1942 Hollywood Caravan bond rally in Washington DC. Among the
celebrities in the rally are Desi Arnaz, Claudette Colbert, Bert Lahr,
Cary Grant, Groucho Marx, Pat O'Brian... and Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy.

Stan & Babe appear throughout the 7+ minutes of footage, which is a
combination of (mostly) silent and sound; the boys are not on the few
soundtracked clips. They appear mingling amongst the other Hollywood
celebrities, and for a few moments in character, clowning around in a
jeep.
