OUR NEXT
MEETING
January 18, 2003 |
"Hurry,
Lola! They're Getting Restless!"
Happy Birthday,
Babe!!!
Stop by for a special celebration, Perfect
Day Tent style...of Oliver Hardy's 111th birthday...including a piece of
Ollie-decorated cake! The venue may be different, but the fun will be just
what you've come to expect!
Mark Turner
has put together another terrific program for us:
 |
THE SAWMILL--A
Larry Semon silent comedy from 1922, set in a lumber yard, and featuring Oliver
Hardy as the foreman...Babe Hardy!
|
 |
SUGAR DADDIES--A
rarely seen Laurel & Hardy silent comedy from 1927. With the help of his
butler (Ollie) and lawyer (Stan), millionaire Cyrus Brittle (James Finlayson)
tries to correct a minor indiscretion from the night before...a new "Mrs.
Brittle" and her family! This was the Team's first film for MGM, and was
pretty much a reworking of LOVE 'EM AND WEEP.
|
 |
TWO TARS--Laurel
and Hardy...a massive traffic jam...and a precursor to the incredible
destruction wrecked in BIG BUSINESS. This 1928 comedy is definitely a fan
favorite. (At its original release at one theater, the running of the
feature film had to be postponed when the audience demanded that TWO TARS be run
again!) You don't want to miss this one!
|
 |
BLOTTO--It's
1930 and Prohibition. The Boys are planning a big night on the town with
"an illegal beverage" saved for a special occasion. Of course, Mrs. Laurel
(the delightful Anita Garvin) has another idea! (The original release
included the song, "The Curse Of An Aching Heart.")
|
 |
BRATS--Also
from 1930, this wonderful film features Stan and Ollie as themselves...and their
children! Needless to say, little Stan and little Ollie are chips off the
old block! The "special effects" are still quite impressive...over 70
years later! As an added plus, we get to hear Ollie singing "Go To Sleep
My Baby." And, oh, that ending..."I'll get it. You might spill it!"
